Termites are the most destructive wood pest in the region. They live underground and enter homes through cracks in foundations or wood-to-soil contact. They feed 24/7 and often go undetected until damage is significant.
Signs: Mud tubes, hollow-sounding wood, discarded wings.
Carpenter ants do not eat wood but excavate it to build nests. They are attracted to moist, decaying wood but can spread into dry wood and are larger black ants, often active at night.
Signs: Frass (wood shavings), rustling noises in walls, winged ants in spring.
Carpenter bees bore into soft woods (like pine or cedar) to create nesting tunnels. Male carpenter bees are territorial but don’t sting; females can sting if provoked. They can commonly be found around fascia boards, decks, and porches
Signs: Round entry holes in wood, yellow dust, buzzing bees
Powder post beetles infest hardwoods (oak, ash, walnut, etc.) in flooring, furniture, or structural wood. Their larvae can bore into wood causing damage overtime
Signs: Frass, tiny round exit holes
